Bloggy Giveaways Carnival
I can't resist a giveaway -- lots of drawings to enter AND lots of new faces to meet. The quarterly carnival is for one week, July 28 - August 1. Go to the Bloggy Carnival Giveaways site to participate.
Anyway, I'm Shawna, the mom around here. Scamp's my rambunctious almost 3-year old who inspires much of my blogging. And you'll see my hubby, Matt (aka Beef) around, too. I love to write and have picked back up my love of reading as well. Recently, another blogging buddy and I started a Christian book review site for parents and teens called Teen Lit Review. Please stop by if you get a chance. We are doing a book giveaway there, too.
Now, let's get down to the real business. I'm giving away my personal copy of the book "Snow Angel" by Jamie Carie.
Synopsis (from book jacket): When Noah Wesley heard the faint sound outside the door of his remote Alaskan mountain cabin during a violent nighttime blizzard, it was no less than the voice of God that urged him to take a closer look, soon to discover his snow angel.
Unconscious and more than half frozen to death, her name, as Noah would later learn after boldly saving her life, was Elizabeth, a beautiful young woman, fragile yet fierce, and intent on discovering gold like so many others in that region during the late 1800s.
But why Elizabeth was so drawn to the gold, and why she would chase it even through a pounding storm that no man would dare face, was a secret to be shared with no one else, not even at the invitation of Noah's deep blue trusting eyes.
I was a bit disappointed in how the book started, being Christian fiction and all. The plot was pretty cliche, nothing original. It was, however, very romantic but not one of my favorite romances. It was enough of a good read to pass on though.
Rules to enter drawing:
1. Leave a comment. You don't have to be a blogger, but please leave a way to contact you if you aren't.
2. You must be a US resident.
That's all. Because I'm late to enter the carnival I'm extending my drawing to August 7, which gives everyone a week to enter. Entries will be taken up until noon CST on Thursday, August 7.

Meme About My Kid(s)
1. Link your tagger and list the rules on the blog.
2. Share 7 facts about your kiddos on your blog…random, weird, funny…whatever you want!
3. Tag 7 people at the end of your post
4. Don’t forget to let the tagged people know!
7 things about my kid:
1. Scamp always has time for a song. She often makes up her own words to her favorite tunes.
2. One of Scamp's favorite foods is bologna face. Her daddy showed her how to eat eyes, a nose, and a mouth out of the bologna, then sport it for all to see. She doesn't seem to mind the grease as much as I do.
3. One of Scamp's newest sayings is "I'm ready to rock!" I have no idea where she picked it up from, but it seems appropriate to her yell it right before she dives off the coffee table.
4. Scamp's favorite outfit is the one she came out with the day she was born and often she will appear clothesless for all our neighbors and company to see. Our Thursday night group is immune to her antics since she derobes almost every time they're here.
5. Scamp is a Daddy's Girl...still. Many a night she will scream and cry and rip herself from my arms if I try to put her to bed. "Daddy put me to bed, Mama!" "Get away, Mama!" She loves her Daddy!
6. Scamp loves to talk on the phone and will request to call her Nana often. "Hello, Nana. I have a booboo. I paying (playing) with kitkat. I love you." She's a talker.
7. Scamp loves to cook. Anything related to playing kitchen, and she's all over it. She loves to play "drive-thru" the best. Out of no where she'll put on a hat or find a hole to peep out of and say "You want burger and fries? Here you go, sir."
Can you tell just how precious she is? I'll tag a few people just to play along.
1. Sonya
2. Momma
3. Coach Jenny
4. Annie
5. Donetta
6. Jeannene
7. Chappyswife

We'll Be on the Road
Instead I will talk about the Little People Swap Scamp and I are participating in. Here she is with her new buddy "Box" who was set to accompany us on our vacation this next week. Following which he would have been sent to our Little Swap Partner up north.

But, Scamp quickly became attached to this little scraggly raccoon and carried him in her shirt for a few hours as her new baby. How could I send him away?

So, we picked up a new "Box" (Box #2), identical to his brother minus the chocolate milk stains Box #1 sustained a couple of weeks ago, who will also be traveling with us. Boxes 1 and 2 will pose in many a picture in the Smoky Mountains, then Scamp and I will be making a scrap book and sending it, Box #2, plus a few other goodies to our New York partners, who will in turn send us their scrapbook fun.
I won't be posting much this next week but will have lots to share when we return. See you soon, and don't forget to leave more questions for me.

Little People on the Road Swap
Mama said I could find a little buddy. You know, like a stuffed teddy or kitkat to ride along with us this year when we go to the Smokies. Then, me and Buddy are gonna do a lot of posin' for the camera on our vacation. Then, Mama's gonna let me help paste those pictures in a scrapbook (and post several on Scamp's Place, too) to send to our partners in crime. Well, Mama says not really crime partners but other kiddos who are gonna play along and send us a scrapbook and some souvenirs, too.
"It's gonna be great!" That's my new favorite saying.
Mama and me want to invite all you bloggers and your kids to play along, too. You don't even have to go on vacation! Just take your new buddy 'round your town and take lots of pictures. Mama added the link to the Little People Swap up above. Go visit to read all the rules and sign up. The deadline is June 10th or the first 50 to sign up.

Murder Mystery 2008
Would you have thought all these characters came from the Bible? Of course, not exactly. They are more updated than their Bible-time counterparts ( and maybe a wee bit exaggerated on a few parts), but the strong-willed, selfish and manipulative personalities are all there. The most interesting part was actually identifying with the "bad girls of the bible." Yes, I did share a few characteristics. I would have to say some of the most memorable moments of the evening were seeing the hippies in protest out on my lawn and watching my friend Robin sashay in wearing her showgirl costume. I nearly fainted (with laughter)! I so enjoyed seeing how inventive my friends were in making these characters come to life. What fun (and a blessing)!

Name That Movie: Updated
1. Pick 10 of your favorite movies.
2. Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess (if you know them all, please don’t guess every one).
4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
5. No Googling or IMDb-ing. That’s cheating, and that’s no fun!
Here's the quotes:
1. "And those are the words of a gentleman? From the moment I met you your aroggance and conceit and your selfish disdain for the feelings of other made me realize that you are the last man in the world I could ever be prevailed upon to marry." Pride and Prejudice: Lauren and Sonya
2. "Whenever I'm in a room with a guy, no matter who it is - a date my dentist, anybody - I think, "If we were the last two people on Earth, would I puke if he kissed me?" Girls Just Want to Have Fun (80s movie)
3. "Eminem's on the phone; he wants an answer now."
"Umm... plain. Umm... peanut." 13 Going on 30
4. "It came to me, my own, my love... my... preciousssss." Lord the the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring: Gail and Donetta
5. "Ask any racer. Any real racer. It don't matter if you win by an inch or a mile. Winning's winning." The Fast and the Furious
6. " I don't know if I oughta go sailin' down no hill with nothin' between the ground and my brains but a piece of government plastic." Christmas Vacation (Chevy Chase)
7. "No! I'm going to limit myself to doing everything girls do wrong in relationships. Basically, everything we know guys hate. I'll be clingy, needy..." How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days: Lauren and Sonya
8. "Elves aren't that short you know. That's just a stupid myth created by that "Elves and the Shoemaker" story. Do I look small enough to fit in a shoe? Stinkin' Grimm Brothers!" Ella Enchanted
9. "There's a diffrence between a failure and a fiasco. A failure is merely the absence of success. Any fool can achieve failure. But a fiasco, a fiasco is a disaster of epic propotions. A fiasco is a folk tale told to other's to make other people feel more alive because it didn't happen to them." Elizabethtown
10. "All you need is for one person to think you're cool, and you're in. Everyone else will be scared to question it. " Never Been Kissed

5 Things You Want Your Kids To Know
1. Mama's not perfect. That's why she has to rely on God. I hope to teach Scamp that we all need a Savior and are all in need of forgiveness.
2. God's not a big, mean tyrant who stomps on you while you're down. I believed this lie for years. And God is still transforming my mind to not believe that I have to earn my way to Him. He loves unconditionally. He always forgives me, and He doesn't look at me any differently when I've messed up. Oh, that hits so close to home.
3. Your own worth is not tied into how others see you. You don't have to be a people pleaser. It's ok to say no, and it's ok if others say they don't like you because what's most important is how God sees you. When you're saved, Jesus' righteousness is bestowed to you. God cannot see you any other way than how He sees His perfect Son. We will never be perfect, but that's God's FREE gift -- righteousness.
4. I will always love you. I'm not God. I do get frustrated. I make mistakes. But, I do love you.
5. You will reap what you sow. The Bible is telling the truth. Sin has consequences that we have to bear. If you choose to live in darkness, then your life will be dark. If you live in the truth, in God's light, you will see the blessings.
I don't tag very often, but I'm going to this time:
Sonya at Mo Mhile Gra
Vail at Thoughts of a Wannabe
Momma at Momma's Mindsweep
Lauren at Baseballs and Bows
Annie at My Life As Annie
Elizabeth at the Hazlett Family
Let me know if you can participate.

The Restaurant Meme
1. Puleo's Grill - this place has everything from Italian to steaks and seafood to home cooking, and you can call 15 minutes ahead to be seated immediately when you get there!! They also have great desserts. My favorite is the chocolate lasagna with layers of chocolate cake, ice cream, and chocolate and caramel syrup.
2. China Wok - Two of our favorites are Chinese and Mexican. This is where we order our take out. They give you big servings, so I enjoy mine for two or three days. I love the Sesame Chicken and the Moo Goo Gai Pan.
3. Daily Buffet and Grill- I had to include two Chinese places! This is our all time favorite Chinese buffets because it is huge!! I've hardly seen one bigger, and it's so affordable. They even have a Hibachi Grill, which Beef loves.
4. Camino Real - We have several Mexican restaurants, and three Camino Real's in the city where we live. We not only love the taste of their food the best, we also love the speed which we are served. We usually have our meals within 5 to 10 minutes, even for Sunday lunch!
5. The Front Porch Cafe - I've only eaten here once but hope we can go back! The restaurant is famous for it's desserts, and people from all around order speciality cakes from here often. My favorite dessert is the Snicker's Cake. Mmm. It's so rich. The restaurant itself is located in an old home that is over a 100 years. They serve home cooking with southern charm!
Have you noticed a trend? Our favorite restaurants usually have to have fast service and short waits for tables! Immediate seating is best, especially if you have a hungry, fussy girl on your hands.
I'm not going to tag anyone because once again those who I would have tagged have already done this one!
Rules:
Link to name of person that tagged you.
Include state and country you live in.
List top five favorite local restaurants.
Tag 5 other people and let them know they've been tagged.

Seven, Or Ten Things Meme
1. I eat everything plain. I dislike most condiments, especially if cold. I can stand heated BBQ sauce and Italian dressing on cooked meats, but if it's room temp or cold, no way. I eat all my sandwiches plain even excluding cheese on burgers. I order my salads with no dressing.
2. I was in band in middle school and high school and played the alto saxophone. I was decent but hated practicing. I even went to band camp all throughout high school. I loved marching band. We had to memorize all our music and steps out on the field. I still have my sax and don't think I could ever sell it.
3. I love puzzles: jigsaw puzzles and puzzle games. I used to get all my puzzles out as a small child and sit in the kitchen floor and work them. I would work jigsaw puzzles now, but I know Scamp would steal my pieces. The new puzzle game I love is Sudoku.
4. I am a registered dietitian. Many of you may already know, but I don't usually (or ever:) write about nutrition on my blog. I was interested in nutrition since my teenage years. I could tell you how many grams of fat were in the foods I ate off the top of my head, but I didn't realize how much I loved the field until I was a sophmore in college. I didn't even now nutrition was a medical field.
5. I'll steal a suggestion from Sonya from her Ten on Tuesday. She loves pink, but I hate the color. I refused to wear it as a child. It was the only color that specifically belonged to girls, so I refused to be pink and frilly. I have outgrown my loathing of the color somewhat. I do wear some dark shades of pink but still will not wear baby girl pink even though I do dress up my Baby Girl in lots of pink. She seems to enjoy it!! Hey, now purple isn't a girly color is it? Cause that's one of my favorites!
6. I was born with jet black hair. My mom has black hair, so she thought it would stay that way. But by the time I was two, my hair had turned sandy blonde. Every time I would get my hair cut short, it would turn brown. When I would grow it out, it would develop blonde streaks. Now, I just highlight it because it would be completely brown.
7. My sister and I gave our lives to Christ on the same night at a church revival in 1990. I was 11, and she was 14. I had actually felt convicted to go up to the front of the church to be saved during the morning service but didn't. I went home to pray about it, but it just didn't seem to be the right time. That night was the first night of revival, and I went forward. I knelt down on the bench in front of the pulpit and began to pray. As is our church's tradition, all the other believers went to the front of the church to pray with me. I lifted my head up to find that everyone was still praying. My mom was beside me and asked if I thought I was saved. I said, "I think so."
It seemed like being saved was supposed to be a huge surge of emotion, but for me being so young, it wasn't. God let me know though when everyone in the whole church began to sing and hug me.
My sister came up to the front after me to pray and continued to pray later on that night at home. I overheard her say to my mother that she had been convicted to go forward when she saw me go up. It was all in God's perfect timing. He used me to help my sister see that she needed Him as well even though I had no idea at the time. God may use us in other people's lives, and we may never know the extent of it. We never know who might be watching.
I would love to know more about everyone else. Leave me a comment.

Randomized Questions
1. Do you have a favorite hobby? If so, please share it with us. My favorite hobby right now would be blogging. I love to write, and I love pictures in general. I have been able to do both with my blog. My second favorite hobby is scrapbooking, but I haven't had as much time since Scamp was born and because I blog a lot!!
2. What is your favorite blog to visit and why?
This one is not fair because I have several blogs I love and read on a regular basis. But, if I have to pick one it would be Vader's mom because we're friends outside of the blogging world. I copied her and became a blogger, then she sent some of her blogging buddies over to my site to welcome me. I love reading about her life with Jeff and Vader. We've really been able to connect through email and blogging.
3. Who inspires you most and why?
There are several individuals that have inspired me over the years. I have actually already written about them at my other blog. Click here for my full explanation. In short, I have been inspired by David's life and his writings in the Bible. He has inspired my poetry and my being open and honest with God. Also my Sunday School teacher as a teenager, Margie, inspired me to be a better person through devotion and service for God. Judith, my mentor and friend now, has inspired me to always trust in God and seek his will by living her own life in this manner. And, my friend and cousin Jennifer, who has always been a great encourager and confidant throughout my life, has always inspired me to have hope in the things that God has promised me.
4. What is the most important character trait you wish to instill in your children?
Faithfullness. I hope that through my life I will be able to live a faithful life to God as He has always been faithful to me. We are instructed to have faith, even if it's as small as a mustard seed. God works in the lives of those who are faithful to Him and will fully bless us beyond what we could possibly imagine. We are also called to be faithful in marriage. Sometimes, marriage is extremely difficult, but with God's help and our willingness to continue to love each other, God can and will change our circunstances for the better.
5. What is the most inspiring book you've read to date?
The most inspiring book I've read besides the Bible of course, is "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren. I have read through it twice now and have been inspired to serve God in deeper ways both times. The book describes in detail the 5 purposes for our life here on earth. We were made to worship God, to fellowship with God and other believers, to learn discipleship so that we may become like Jesus, to serve God through ministry, and to evangelize or spread the Good News of Jesus Christ.
I know several of my blogging friends have already played along in one degree or another, but if you would like to be randomized by me, just let me know.

Get Real: Bloggers Without Make-up

Stephanie over at Adventures in Babywearing is hosting a contest where you post a picture of yourself without any make-up. Next Friday, she's going to have a drawing and choose two participants to win a prize. So join the fun!
I also posted another make-upless picture of myself with Scamp this past week. You have to view the slideshow until the end to catch a glimpse of my unconcealed complexion.
And while we're bearing it all today, I've had the grossest day ever. I decided to take Scamp to the nursery at Patterson Park so I could work out. We make it halfway up the sidewalk, and she pukes all over both of us!! Poor baby, but I can still smell puke and that was this morning. A couple hours after we got back home, the cat left me a surprise on 2 beanbags. He peed on one then pooped on the other. Could this day be any grosser?!!

My Workspace

Sonya tagged me for his one. Above is my desk that my parent's bought me for one of my teenage birthdays. I use this mostly for my devotion time.

This is Beef's computer, which he lets me use. All the stacks of books and papers are mine, but all the hardware is his. See the computers under the desk, that's not all of them. I couldn't fit the entire desk in the shot.
I'm in the process of checking my email. I just finished visiting those who commented on my Saturday photo hunt. I'm so behind. Hopefully, I'll get to visist my Blog Buddies soon.
