Smoke-Filled Chaos

Two nights ago I awoke to the sound of my hubby racing up the steps yelling my name and the screeching of the upstairs smoke detector where our baby girl Scamp was sleeping. It was 2:30 am, and the blaring alarm was actually coming through the baby monitor. I was still in quite a daze, but the smell of smoke caused me to rush to throw on clothes and shoes just in case we had to go outside. I prayed frantically that God would let us find where the smoke was coming from.

As I was about to climb the steps to Scamp's room, I saw Beef racing in from outside in nothing but his boxers. He didn't think twice about any of our neighbors being night owls until after he came back in. He told me to go get Scamp and look around to see if I saw any smoke. I reached the top to find her still laying in her bed, grinning at me as if nothing strange was going on. I didn't see any smoke, just smelled it, and had to take a moment to sit down and catch my breath. The feeling of my heart pounding through my chest had made me a little light-headed.

I brought Scamp downstairs to cuddle on the couch until we could figure out what was going on. I had already offered to call the fire department, but we couldn't find the source of the odor. Beef had already checked nearly every electrical outlet in the house and was now laying on the floor underneath a side table in the living room sniffing the vent to see if the smell got any worse, and it did. He thought the smell was probably the emergency heat coming on and causing the lent and dust in the coils and filters to catch fire.

The emergency heater in our HVAC unit normally causes the stench of smoke when it comes on for the first time every year, but it has never caused the fire alarm to go off, especially from the alarm upstairs. The smell did in fact accentuate with the heater blowing, so we settled back down to try and catch a few more hours of rest.

Beef decided to sleep upstairs with Scamp. I don't think I could have had it any other way. I fell back to sleep and awoke to Scamp's chatter around 9:00 am or so. Beef later told me he hadn't gotten a wink of sleep after the alarm went off. He stayed awake listening and checking every creek in the wall. He wanted to be sure there wasn't anything smoldering in the walls. What a brave hubby! I am so lucky to have such a good man that would fore go sleep to keep his family safe. And thank God we were all safe.

One Year Blogging Anniversary and Giveaway

I am so excited to be celebrating such an awesome event. This same day last year was the beginning of my first entry into blogging land. I was so ecstatic then that I did two posts that first day. But, take a look at my first posts. What better way to start off than by talking about my favorite time of the year -- fall.

The time for bonfires and ooey gooey smores is at hand, and to celebrate both my favorite season and my year anniversary, I'll be giving away a $10 Gift Certificate to Starbucks.

The only thing is I don't really like coffee, but I'm all into a Vanilla Chai Tea Latte with lots of whipped cream and chocolate on top. Mmm!!! And coffee (or a good ole cup of hot chocolate, which I have the perfect new Pirate Princess mug from Stacy from Disney World) tends to go right along with a good book, which I'd love to be curled up reading right now.

Leave me a comment to be entered into the drawing and if you give me a shout out and link back here, I'll enter your name in twice. The drawing will be next October 31st at noon. And make sure you link to your blog or leave an email address for me to contact you in your comment!

And here are my One Year Ago Today pictures of Scamp for you to see how much she's grown.

Who Needs Lessons in Cycling 101?

That would be me! A couple of weeks ago, I took my brand-new bicycle out for a spin while Beef watched Scamp. It was one of the first cool fall evenings we had, and I wanted to enjoy it. I had made it about 5 minutes from home when I hit a small incline causing me to pedal my hardest. I reached the summit of the the hill winded but confident when my right pant leg got caught in the chain of the bicycle. I was able to catch myself before turning over or pulling my pants down, but when I bent down to unhook myself, I couldn't. The end of my workout pants was lodged well within the metal chain and even the hardest of yanks wasn't freeing it. I didn't know what to do but when I saw an seemingly nice pedestrian making her way toward me, and I motioned her over.

"Excuse me," I said, "This is so embarrassing, but my pant leg seems to be caught, and I think I'm going to need a pair of scissors to cut myself loose."

"Oh," she said. "I have a cell phone. Maybe we could call someone."

I began looking around at all the homes surrounding us and started hinting that maybe she could see if one of our neighbors had any scissors. She seemed threatened by this decision, so I told her I would just call my husband.

I was feeling so awkward that I misdialed twice but finally got Beef on the phone.

"Honey, I need you to bring me a pair of scissors. My pant leg is caught," I tried explaining.

"What?" he replied. He seemed to be baffled by my proclamation.

"Just get in the car and come with a pair of scissors. I'm stuck," I said.

"Ok. I'll be right there," he stated after I told him which street I was stranded on.

I thanked my kind helper, and she walked away leaving me to stand awkwardly on the side of the road next to my bicycle, one pant leg hiked halfway up my calf and a humiliated look on my face. I tried not making any eye contact with the other passer-byers, even another walker with two large dogs that had to stop and sniff the tires of my bicycle.

It seemed Beef was taking forever to come to my rescue. I even considered trying to walk straddling my bicycle toward home, but that was going to take ages not to mention how many stares I would receive with that stance! Beef finally arrived and stepped out of the car, scissors in hand with a fresh smirk painted across his face. He walked toward me, looked at the damage, and pushed the right pedal of the bicycle forward causing the chain to rotate halfway around and FREE my pants! If I wasn't mortified enough already, I was then.

"I needed a good laugh today," he said and got back in the car, I'm sure laughing the whole way home. I took off pedaling in the opposite direction, completely embarrassed, with the now untangled pant leg tucked safely in my sock. I rode straight home, too self-conscious to finish my workout. I was glad the lady who helped me hadn't asked the aid of one of my neighbors afterall.

Now, everyone will be able to identify me as the woman on the turquoise bike with her pants tucked into her socks. "She's still stuck in the 80s," they'll think, but I won't correct their assumptions.

5 Things You Want Your Kids To Know

I stole this meme from Karen at Surviving Motherhood, who was tagged by the original creator of the meme, Claire at One Passion...One Devotion. Those participating are supposed to share the five things they want their kids to know before they “grow up” and then leave a link to their meme in the comment section of Claire’s original post.

1. Mama's not perfect. That's why she has to rely on God. I hope to teach Scamp that we all need a Savior and are all in need of forgiveness.

2. God's not a big, mean tyrant who stomps on you while you're down. I believed this lie for years. And God is still transforming my mind to not believe that I have to earn my way to Him. He loves unconditionally. He always forgives me, and He doesn't look at me any differently when I've messed up. Oh, that hits so close to home.

3. Your own worth is not tied into how others see you. You don't have to be a people pleaser. It's ok to say no, and it's ok if others say they don't like you because what's most important is how God sees you. When you're saved, Jesus' righteousness is bestowed to you. God cannot see you any other way than how He sees His perfect Son. We will never be perfect, but that's God's FREE gift -- righteousness.

4. I will always love you. I'm not God. I do get frustrated. I make mistakes. But, I do love you.

5. You will reap what you sow. The Bible is telling the truth. Sin has consequences that we have to bear. If you choose to live in darkness, then your life will be dark. If you live in the truth, in God's light, you will see the blessings.

I don't tag very often, but I'm going to this time:

Sonya at Mo Mhile Gra
Vail at Thoughts of a Wannabe
Momma at Momma's Mindsweep
Lauren at Baseballs and Bows
Annie at My Life As Annie
Elizabeth at the Hazlett Family

Let me know if you can participate.

New Friends So Close to Home

Last week, Scamp and I had another blog friend visit adventure. I found Tamara's site, Changing More than Diapers a couple of weeks ago, and it turns out we live in the same city. She and her four kids (yes, four -- all adorable) met Scamp and I at a local bookstore for some romping ruckus back in the kids section. I think Scamp was the wildest of all though. At first, Scamp was so intimated by the other children, but then she cozied right up to one of the youngest and stated "Hold yer hand." You have to be pretty special for Scamp to utter that request. She was so taken with Tamara's crew that by the end of our visit I know she would have went right home with them. It was so nice to meet all of you!

Then, this morning I found out a friend from Sunday School has a blog, too. Check out the Hazlett's and their adorable first born and baby #2 on the way.

It has been such a blessing to meet new friends so close to home. Who would have thought I would be saying "I met this person on the web." Still sounds strange, huh?

Rock Stars and Truth Tellers

Slowly, I am working on my list for the Fall Into Reading Challenge 2007. My first finished book was Dark Star: Confessions of a Rock Idol by Creston Mapes. The book reads like a memoir of Everett Lester, lead singer for a very famous rock band. He has been on a path of destruction since his childhood with an abusive father, and he plunges even deeper into darkness living as a drugged-out rock star. The book begins with Everett on trial for murder. He has recently come to faith and must prove himself innocent. It is classified as Christian fiction and a supernatural thriller but the supernatural aspects do not show themselves until later in the book. I bought it on recommendation from Stacy and did truly enjoy it. It was quite a unique story. The sequel is called Full Tilt (Rock Star Chronicles), which I purchased as well but haven't read yet.

My next book was The Truth Teller by Angela Hunt. This one is Christian Medical Science fiction (maybe I'm making this genre up)! It deals a lot with genetics and DNA. Lara Godfrey loses her husband but desparately wants to have his child after his death through the most up-to-date technology. But, she becomes entrapped in a web of lies as a ruthless villan uses her without her knowledge or consent to create what he believes to be a superhuman, aka her precious baby that Lara will stop at nothing to protect. The first half of the book was a bit slow but the second half was completely enrapturing, quick-paced and exciting.

Monster Glam Masquerade Ball 2007

One full tube of white face paint and an itchy costume wig later, I was ready for the hottest costume party to date. Beef waited until the last minute (2 hours prior) to find the perfect matching attire, a Japanese Samurai embroidered robe to my Geisha girl silky threads. He transformed his normally blonde gotee to a dusky black shade using my mascara. And I spiced up my wig with tasseled chopsticks and a bright sapphire magnolia. Traditionally, Geisha apprentices wear cherry blossoms in their oiled hair dos, but those were harder to find.

King Larry and Queen Robin from the Lord of the Rings fantasy met us out our home to commute for the almost hour and half drive to Cookeville, the site of the ball. Just picture a carload of fully costumed adults (except for me -- my wig came off when we stopped for a bite at Mickey D's) wedged in a mid-sized sedan.

Upon reaching the event, we attached our final props, mine being a painted paper parasol and matching fan, Beef's being a realistic plastic Samurai sword used to protect his delicate companion from the likes of another Japanese warrior girl, as you'll see in the pictures. Oh ... looks liked she had him surrendered.

Orange and black streaming balloons lined the entrance as we checked ourselves in. Then, we caught site of Mary, our do-eyed sister-in-law draped across an unknown masked figure. Her escort for the evening was Jack, from the Nightmare Before Christmas. We tried to chat him up, but he chose to be the strong, silent-type. Matt's mom ended up being quite a spicy Morticia look-alike with her graying, elegantly long black wig and glittered lashes while his dad parodied as the overworked roadie who toted oversized props all day.

Our hosts for the evening were Beef's two sisters, Beth and Shan, both with delicately painted masks across their already gorgeous faces. And no, the orange above Shan's eyes wasn't paint. That was her lengthy costume lashes that made themselves known every time she blinked. What fun! Her Predator-jerseyed hubby went along for the ride as a battered hockey player, and the fist behind that black eye? His wife, of course! With her artist touch, silly!

We participated in the costume fashion show first with many a gorgeous and frightening gaggle of formal-attired ghouls. I practiced a few traditional geisha moves from the movie Memoirs of a Geisha prior and twirled and fluttered my cherry-blossomed umbrella and fan to the beat of a shamisan, a three-stringed instrument Geisha often play. Indian Jones also made a cameo, leather lasso and all, but he was too quick for the likes of my slow-focusing camera.

We were them entertained by a brilliant pair of eleven year olds who dazzled us with their award-winning illusions followed by a formal dance competition and a very freaky and highly entertaining rendition of the choreographed dance, Thriller. And we don't want to forget a major reason for the two night event. A silent auction was held both nights, where the proceeds will be going to benefit Autism Awareness.

Completely exhausted as the evening was nearing midnight, we excused ourselves to de-costume, make-up and all, before parting with our wonderful hosts while being serenaded by some very talented Scary-aoke competitors. It was an amazing evening, and being privy to the behind-the-scenes planning, what an exceptional job Shan and Beth of Studio Six Limited did pulling this event off.

Today's A Big Day

I've been limited in time for the past couple of days. My part-time consultant work kept me busy this week, and today is the Masquerade Ball. I will soon start applying the make-up and wig of my costume. I was a little peeved about the delivery time of my wig. I ordered it last week and paid extra to have it arrive within 3-4 days. They didn't ship it until Tuesday of this week, and I just got it yesterday. I know there was a holiday on Monday, but they could have shipped the product last Friday. I'm glad I didn't chance the regular shipping though. I haven't seen a geisha yet with blonde hair! I will be posting pictures soon!

And my NEW blog design is being perfected as we speak!!!!!

This Same Time Last Year

September 21, 2006

September 22, 2007

September 22, 2007

It time's again to walk back down memory lane and see where Scamp was at one year ago at this time. Our trip to my hometown county fair is usually the week of my birthday (and now Scamp's) every year. It's beginning usually marks the change of our humid, sweltering summer weather into the cool crisp breezes of the fall. But this year, the mugginess is hanging on like a not-so-agile cat swinging from a tree branch by a claw. I'm so ready for that cat to fall (and, of course, land feet first into a pile of freshly fallen autumn leaves).

Last year's carnival was a bit cooler and more bearable, and not a drop of the typical rain showers hit the paved walkway that circles the smorgasbord of rides. One of Scamp's favorite rides was the carousal, along with thousands of other children who stand in line to mount the prancing ponies. And it's the best ride to take pictures of since the colors make a perfect backdrop that just screams fun.

That's Nana (my mom) holding tight to Scamp. Last year, I sat right up on that horse with Scamp but didn't get the chance this year -- and not just because I was afraid a carney would bring out the pony whip and not so nicely ask me to dismount for fear the animal might plunge to the ground shattering into thousands of brightly colored glazed porcelain pieces causing the other children to scream in shock and dismay over the dead horsey. No, I would have chanced that, but my mom and sister wanted turns with Scamp.

And check out the fact that my mom is wearing an almost identical shirt from last year. Sorry . . . I had to point that out.

I hope to post more fall photos as the month continues, and I celebrate my one year stint in bloggyland!

More Awards to Give and Receive

Karen at Surviving Motherhood has blown my mind by giving me a couple of awesome blogging awards. She is so sweet and inspiring, and if you don't visit her blog, you need to because she is a great encouragement. Thank you, Karen, for being so thoughtful.

The first award she gave me was the Blogging Friend Forever Award, which is "presented to awesome BLOG owners who keep their readers excited about their posts. Their blog posts are interesting (NOT spammy) and worth reading and keep their subscribers looking forward to each and every post."

You really know how to make a girl feel special, Karen. I will be giving this award to a few other blogging friends who really give their hearts out during their posts:

Donetta at A Life Uncommom and A Life Restored. She shares the dark struggles God was able to bring her out of. She definitely has a life-changing story that God gave her the ability to be able to share.

Tamara at Changing More Than Diapers. We're new blog friends, like within the last few weeks, but I've been moved to tears many times while reading her blog. She not only shares her feelings and struggles, but she shares stories that affect us all.

Belinda at Whatever He Says. She has such a talent in writing and uses her gift to glorify God.

Laura at the Noodle Incident. She shares tidbits of her everyday life in such a way that you feel like you really know her. She's always making me laugh with her posts.

Karen also gave me the totally fabulous award. Now that's a compliment. I'm going to pass this on to some really fab blogging friends so that they feel as special as I do. Girls, you all really make my days. I'm so glad I've met each and every one of you, and I hope to meet you all in person one day (if I haven't already).

Momma at Momma's Mindsweep
Stacy at Vader's Mom
Sonya at Mo Mhile Gra
Lauren at Baseballs and Bows
Stacy ay Exceedingly Mundane
Vail at Thoughts of a Wannabe
Brenda -- you know who your are!!

Photo Hunters: Curvy

This week's theme is curvy. I chose to go with the curvy lines of our blow-up pool and floats. BTW, they were playing hide-n-go seek from Mama!

Weekend Reflection

I miss the reflections!! And who says I have to reflect on Saturdays anyway? So, I'm doing my own.

This has been one long exhausting weekend not only for me but for my dear sweet hubby as well. The new account he's working on at work has caused him to be on the computer pretty much when he's awake this week. He took a few breaks here and there to help out with Scamp, but it's been me and her for the most part the last few days.

Yesterday, my cousin LeChelle, her kids, her mom and LeChelle's little sisters took a trip to the local Discovery Center here and invited Scamp and myself. We had so much fun painting and building with blocks and splashing in the child size waterway/dam system. Scamp was soaked even though she had on a water smock. The best part was the Shadow Wall. Have you seen one of those before? Basically, you pose flat up against the specially made wall, turn the lights out, then presto, your shadow has been "glued" to the wall. I'm glad no one else wanted a turn because we posed and posed. Scamp would even pose by herself, one leg hiked up and belly flat to the wall. She squealed and laughed her head off. LeChelle is quite the creative cat and had ideas like holding a child up off the ground and plastering him to the wall to make him fly! She even did a handstand and made a cheer leading pyramid-type pose with all the kids. You have to see the pictures.

Today, LeChelle and I treated ourselves to a spa pedicure and manicure respectively. I decided on the French manicure. The treatment included an exfoliation scrub and massage, but the lady charged me extra for the French style instead of just a basic polish. No other spa has done that to me before. LeChelle got the great bargain with her pedicure. They had the fanciest pedicure chairs we had ever seen, decked out with pillows and the room had mood lighting to add to our relaxation. We were living it up! LeChelle nearly fell asleep during her hour and a half treatment. I would have chosen the same, but my icky nails keep me from letting anyone work on them! Yeah, I know -- TMI!

I headed to Hastings after grabbing a bite to eat to browse the books and movies. I found a great deal. I bought a used hardcover edition of "The Begotten" by Lisa T. Bergren for $5.00 with the same edition, only new, was sitting beside it for $23.00. Them I got a used copy of "The Hidden" by Kathyrn Mackel with a $5.00 coupon. Yeah!

Later, I'll be watching Memoirs of a Geisha as research for my costume for the Masquerade Ball.

Thank you, Honey, for watching Scamp while I got some much needed me time!!

Time Travel Tuesday

This week we will travel back to our first home... was it your very own apartment, or a home with your new spouse? What memories do you have from that first home? How did you make that first house (or apartment) a home?

I really don't consider my first apartment in college my first home although once I moved out of my parent's home, I rarely slept there again. And I've already spoke of my first apartment here in another Time Travel Tuesday.

So, I will begin with our first apartment. We lived in a nice gated apartment complex when Beef and I first got married. It was two bedrooms on the ground floor shared by Beef's brother, who helped pay the rent. Six months later, we bought a house and moved along with brother Josh.

We found a great deal on a HUD (repossessed) home -- two-stories and 2000 plus square feet at a 1200 square foot home price. God really blessed us. We had to relay carpet and linoleum and paint the entire house in a month's time, the time limit set to have the home reappraised.

Beef and I travelled down to Dalton, Georgia, carpet-heaven city of the South. Side-note: I have to tell this story. Beef was afraid the 15-foot trailer would break our hitch, so we drove the 3-hour commute with my dad's 8-foot trailer in tow. I chose a nice tan and off-white bargain-priced Berber carpet. We decided on the 15-foot roll since our two-car garage had been remodeled into a den. This size roll seemed to make the most sense.

The carpet guys hoisted the carpet up onto (remember 15-foot roll, 8-foot trailer) our trailer, but the roll hung off the front and back of it. The carpet was so heavy (we needed it for the entire house), we barely had to strap it on there. It wasn't going anywhere. Being in such a hurry, we decided to chance the awkward fit on the trailer and drive back.

We entered Interstate 24 going west toward home, but upon our Jeep Cherokee hitting 40 mph, the whole vehicle started to rock. The heavy end of the carpet hanging off the back caused the trailer to sway back and forth and jerk the entire vehicle with it. We didn't know what to do. I thought it best to travel Hwy 41 the rest of the way. "It's a straight shot from here to home," I told Beef. Wrong!! Unbeknownst to me, the highway leafs and crisscrosses repeatedly. And it's really hard to navigate without a map!

Not only were we subject to constant swaying and jolting at a maximum speed of 35 mph, we had no idea where we were going. We ended up missing our turn outside of Chattanooga. The road we were travelling actually transformed into a one-way dirt road detouring up the mountain. Our two options were, A. Turn around and drive an hour to our missed exit, or B. Take the interstate up Mont Eagle Mountain, a dangerously steep stretch of road without the risk of a rocking trailer careening into a semi.

We hadn't spoken in a few hours (Can you say cut the tension with a knife?) and weren't about to add another couple of hours to our drive. We said a hearty prayer and entered the interstate cautiously. We gradually gained speed, hitting 30, 40, 50 mph, and thank the Lord, there was no rocking!! Goosebumps formed on my arms as I told Beef, "Honey, there has to be angels back there holding that trailer in place." The trailer had not NOT swayed since we left Dalton.

As soon as those words left my mouth, we hit a bump in the road and the wobbling began again. But, we had made it most the way up the mountain, and there was our exit in sight. We managed to arrive at my parent's home nine hours later from our departure, worn and bitter.

Today, the carpet is laid, and we still have a hard time laughing about the incident. We won't make that mistake again! At the end of the month, our home appraised about $25,000 dollars more than what we paid for it. We are still here and are slowly replacing our hand-me-down furniture. Our favorite room is our movie room where the garage used to be. We play movies and video games on the wall through a mounted projector, and we love having company over to share in the fun.

Join in at Annie's.

A Gift from a Friend

My wonderful friend Stacy sent me an Amazon gift card for my very special day, and this is what I purchased. I really love books and was completely impressed with the devotion "David: 90 Days to a Heart Like His" by Beth Moore. I had no idea the book was going to look so eloquent. I started it a few days ago and have already been blessed.

David is one of my favorite characters in the Bible because he is described as a "man after God's on heart". He sinned big in our terms, killing another man for his wife but still sought to serve God. His psalms are so open and honest, showing me that I can come to God even when I'm mad at Him. He writes so much of God's mercy and understanding, strength and refuge, and He praises Him like no other in the Bible.

"The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" Psalm 27:1

"Sing praise to the Lord, you saints of His, and give thanks for the remembrance at His holy name. For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning." Psalm 30: 4-5

What wonderful promises that apply to all God's children!

I believe David really understood God's love. And as Beth writes in the book, David was a literal picture of the Christ yet to come. He was literally the son of "man." His father's name, Jesse, means "man," and Jesus referred to Himself as "the Son of man." David was also a shepherd. There are many examples where Jesus is referred to as our Shepherd.

This devotion is an excellent choice. I also bought "Really Bad Girls of the Bible" by Liz Curtis Higgs and "Freefall" by Kristen Heitzman.

Thank you, Stacy!!

Papa's Hill

For a fall day, it sure was hot. I was expecting more of a nice fall breeze, especially since we were up on the hill behind my FIL's house. It was a gorgeous view. I love the pictures with the church in the background. We had a great time except for the ground being laden with sharp sticks. We only pretended to walk on the "walking" picture. It looks like we are really going down the path. It turned out to be such a thoughtful picture: a mother and daughter walking side-by-side down a freshly cut path to the church below. I can see God's hand everywhere in the picture. Do you see Him?

Pictures taken by my wonderful SILs from Studio Six Photography.
